Come celebrate the 66th season at the Stratford Festival of Canada!
In 1952 three visionary people had a unique idea – to establish a festival of Shakespearean theatre in the small southwestern Ontario city of Stratford. They were journalist Tom Patterson, stage director Tyrone Guthrie, and designer Tanya Moiseiwitsch. Their dream come true on the night of July 13, 1953 when actor Alec Guinness stepped onto the stage to speak the opening words of Richard III. An extraordinary adventure in Canadian cultural life had begun.
In the years since, internationally acclaimed performers such as Hume Cronyn, Colm Feore, Lorne Greene, Julie Harris, Christopher Plummer, William Shatner, Maggie Smith and Jessica Tandy have graced the stages at the Stratford Festival.
Today the Festival employs more than 840 people (460 year-round) features more that 650 performances over a 28-week season in three theatres.
Stratford and surrounding Perth County are filled with history and natural beauty. It is an area made rich by the talents of artists and farmers, tradespeople and professionals all working together to build a friendly and active community in Southwestern Ontario.
